Protecting your identity is so important that the U.S. government has devoted an entire web site to educating consumers about identity theft and how to protect themselves from identity thieves. There are ways to protect yourself from identity theft, but with so many vulnerabilities, no consumer should be trying to defend themselves from identity theft alone. Luckily, you don’t have to do it all by yourself. There are identity protection services online that can help you monitor your credit reports and keep an eye out for cues that your identity has been compromised.

TrustedID is an online service for identity protection that is designed for individuals and families. The service is inexpensive, but comprehensive. TrustedID will set fraud alerts on your credit reports and scan the internet for any unauthorized use of your personal information. In addition, TrustedID will monitor your medical insurance to be certain that only your family is receiving benefits under your policy. For less than $15 a month, TrustedID will provide full identity protection for your entire family. TrustedID identity protection service comes with a $1,000,000 warranty against damages caused by identity theft.

Identity Guard Total Protection Service provides a full suite of protection services against identity theft. The services provided include credit report monitoring, fraud monitoring and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. Identity Guard monitors for fraud of all kinds, scanning Social Security records, credit card, loan and cell phone applications and public records for any unauthorized use of your personal information. The service also offers lost wallet insurance, and will cancel your credit cards and provide up to $2,000 advance if needed when your wallet is stolen. The addition of Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite adds protection from phishing sites, firewall protection and anti-spam and anti-spyware protection, all important parts of protecting your identity from online theft.

Identity Truth combines credit monitoring with fraud monitoring to help protect your identity from theft. What makes Identity Truth unique is their diagnosis of your “identity health”, a measure of your risk of being targeted by identity thieves. For less than $100 a year, Identity Truth provides you with an annual credit report from Experian and online access to all of the information and sources that they are monitoring on your behalf. In addition, Identity Truth tracks security breaches across the country so that you can easily find if you’ve been put at risk by a data theft from a merchant or bank you’ve patronized.

There are many other online identity protection services, including free tools for your browser that will alert you when you attempt to access a web page that can compromise your security, and email tools to scan for viruses and spyware in your email.

Identity theft, and tips on how to prevent or deal with identity theft, is not new. The history of identity and credit theft is a robust and dangerous one. Read some common facts about ID theft. Identity theft did not begin with the advent of the internet nor the personal computer. The history of identity theft goes back to the scams and fraudulent actions of con men and con women who gained the confidence of the victim they were trying to scam or fraud out of their identity and credit.

Even before the invention of the phone, con men and con women employed many different tricks to gain the confidence of unsuspecting victims in an attempt to engage in identity theft. But even before that, before the trickery of fraud scams used by con men over the phone to engage in identity theft, the history of identity theft was much more violent. In order to steal someone’s identity, the perpetrator of identity theft didn’t need to engage in fraud and scam, they only needed to kill their identity theft victim and take on that person’s identity. Instead of con men and con women engaging in scam and fraud over the phone, they would just kill their victim and walk around as if they were them, using their identity and their credit.

That is the earliest example in the history of identity theft. Since then con men and con women have come a long way in the scam tactics they use over the phone to fraud people out of their identity. As the history of identity theft moved from a violent crime to a more white-collar crime, the con men would use phone scams to fraud unsuspecting victims out of their identity. One popular scam used by con men to fraud identity theft victims using the phone is to call their intended target offering fabulous prizes or great offers of credit cards or credit loans. All the con man making the fake offer would need is a little personal info to confirm the prize winner’s identity. The victim would never see the prizes or credit offered by the con man, all they would see is their credit tarnished and their identity ruined because of the identity theft. This id theft scam has been repeated numerous times throughout the history of identity theft.

Another identity theft fraud seen repeated thorough the history of identity theft is known as dumpster diving. Not so much con men as common thieves, this scam involves people who go through other peoples trash looking for credit card receipts, credit card bills, or any other documents containing personal information that can be used in identity theft or credit theft. This credit scam doesn’t even involve the use of a phone.

As with these types of identity theft and all the other fraud scams throughout the history of id and credit theft, there are many tips and tricks the victim can use to protect themselves and prevent their credit or id from being stolen. There are also many tips and resources available for a victim of identity theft, many of those tips we will look at in the following pages.

For every tip that people come up with to prevent identity theft scams from claiming another victim, those unscrupulous individuals involved in identity theft come up with newer and better ways at claiming another id theft victim. With the increased popularity of the internet and personal computers, identity thieves no longer had to resort to phone scams or dumpster diving to find victims for their identity theft scams. Online ID theft scams have made the job of the identity thief that much easier.

Not only has e-mail made it easier to scam people out of personal information, dishonest web developers are able to make dummy sites that mimic actual company’s web sites in an attempt to trick victims into giving up personal information online. E-mail scams and dummy sites are just some of the online id theft scams that claim millions of victims of online identity theft every year. E-mail online identity theft scams often take the same form as telephone scams, claiming you have won a prize or a large sum of money, but many more people for some reason trust official looking e-mail where they may have been weary of the same message over the phone. And its much easier for an online identity theft scammer to send millions of e-mails in the time it would take to make just a single phone call, increasing the potential number of victims in their online id theft scam. See 3 of the most common identity theft scams online.

Computer viruses and Trojans take all the con work out of claiming victims of identity theft. Trojans and other computer viruses can infect a user’s computer and steal personal information right from the user’s computer hard drive. Other Trojans and computer viruses can track keystrokes and report information you enter on your computer back to an identity thief. Now even though you have taken all the precautions and followed all the tips to protect yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft, someone has gained personal information including passwords and pins to your online accounts, and you have just become a victim of an online identity theft scam. And with the complexity of many computer viruses and Trojans, you may not even be aware that your computer is infected or that you have become a victim of an online id theft scam.

Online identity theft scams don’t just involve personal info and bank accounts on your computer. You can also be the victim of online identity theft if someone uses a computer or Trojan to gain access to your e-mail. From there, someone can send out e-mail from your account, and to everyone online it would appear like those e-mails are coming from you, when really you are just a victim of an online identity theft scam.

Before becoming a victim of identity theft, there are several tips available to protect yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft. Many of the id theft tips available for protecting yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft are common sense, but if you employ these tips on a regular basis, you will be able to stop yourself from becoming a victim of id theft.

Many of the id theft tips available for preventing identity theft and stopping yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft involve personal documents you receive. For protection against identity theft and preventing yourself from becoming a victim, follow these simple tips. When you receive personal documents, stop and think about what you will do with them when you are done. Credit card receipts and credit card bills are two types of private documents that often have a great deal of private account information. And even not so private documents that you receive in the mail have at least your name and address, a good starting point for any unsavory characters looking to make you their next victim of credit or identity theft. It is up to you to prevent identity theft and follow these simple tips to ensure protection of your credit and stop id thieves from stealing your private documents.

Before discarding unwanted private documents, take a minute to stop and shred or destroy any documents that have personal or private info. Shredding private documents is the simplest thing you can do to prevent identity theft and protect your credit. You should also bring in your mail every day so as not to leave personal and private documents in your mailbox. This tip, along with shredding your private documents, helps prevent id theft and offers protection against becoming a victim. You should also immediately report lost or stolen credit cards, and periodically check your consumer credit report for any errors. Stop carrying private documents like social security or birth certificates is another good tip towards the prevention of identity theft. Another identity theft prevention tip is to note when your financial statements usually arrive, and alert the bank if you do not receive these private documents. Also check these statements carefully for any errors.

But the most important tip for preventing id theft and stopping id thieves in their tracks and protecting yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft is to always shred personal and private documents that contain private or financial info.
