History of Identity Theft

Identity theft, and tips on how to prevent or deal with identity theft, is not new. The history of identity and credit theft is a robust and dangerous one. Read some common facts about ID theft. Identity theft did not begin with the advent of the internet nor the personal computer. The history of identity theft goes back to the scams and fraudulent actions of con men and con women who gained the confidence of the victim they were trying to scam or fraud out of their identity and credit.

Even before the invention of the phone, con men and con women employed many different tricks to gain the confidence of unsuspecting victims in an attempt to engage in identity theft. But even before that, before the trickery of fraud scams used by con men over the phone to engage in identity theft, the history of identity theft was much more violent. In order to steal someone’s identity, the perpetrator of identity theft didn’t need to engage in fraud and scam, they only needed to kill their identity theft victim and take on that person’s identity. Instead of con men and con women engaging in scam and fraud over the phone, they would just kill their victim and walk around as if they were them, using their identity and their credit.

That is the earliest example in the history of identity theft. Since then con men and con women have come a long way in the scam tactics they use over the phone to fraud people out of their identity. As the history of identity theft moved from a violent crime to a more white-collar crime, the con men would use phone scams to fraud unsuspecting victims out of their identity. One popular scam used by con men to fraud identity theft victims using the phone is to call their intended target offering fabulous prizes or great offers of credit cards or credit loans. All the con man making the fake offer would need is a little personal info to confirm the prize winner’s identity. The victim would never see the prizes or credit offered by the con man, all they would see is their credit tarnished and their identity ruined because of the identity theft. This id theft scam has been repeated numerous times throughout the history of identity theft.

Another identity theft fraud seen repeated thorough the history of identity theft is known as dumpster diving. Not so much con men as common thieves, this scam involves people who go through other peoples trash looking for credit card receipts, credit card bills, or any other documents containing personal information that can be used in identity theft or credit theft. As with these types of identity theft and all the other fraud scams throughout the history of id and credit theft, there are many tips and tricks the victim can use to protect themselves and prevent their credit or id from being stolen.
